(Frank) Russo says the use of tax money for the beach comes across as a government endorsement. "All this is contributing to what I would call a cultural decline in our country," he points out. "...[P]eople don't realize it but all of these things contribute to harmful effects on the family, family breakups, [and] divorce." And Russo concludes that society as a whole ultimately pays the price.Russo does seem to think that there is room in America for nude beaches, just not supported by tax money.

Actually, I think Mr. Russo has it backwards. Attitudes such has his contribute our nation's cultural decline (or more accurately, cultural stagnation). I rather doubt nudism itself contributes far less to the harmful effects he mentions than the popular media, advertising, and backwards thinking people.
Why shouldn't nude beaches receive government funding? Nudists are taxpayers too and have as much right to enjoy these beaches as their textiled brethren.
At $43 round trip it is hard to believe that the ferry is subsidized to any great extent. It is more likely that Mr. Russo is referring to the "free" shuttle bus from the ferry landing to the beach, however, the "free" bus is paid for in the $43 ferry ticket. It is actually far more likely that this popular and profitable ferry is subsidizing the cost of commuter ferry service to keep those costs low to encourage usage.
I disagree with Rick that the government should subsidize nudist beaches. The government should subsidize nothing and stay out of our way. The "as long as I get mine too" mentality is why our national debt is in the trillions and our taxes are so high.
